People Stories of Survival: Tales of hope, Heroism & Luck
This book is a collection of amazing survival stories from shark bites & lightning
strikes to tidal waves, shipwrecks, stampeding elephants, an Everest blizzard and
what it feels like to fall 14,000 feet without a parachute. Incredible "I was there"
stories from the pages of People.
I decided to read this book a couple of years ago when the children and I started
talking about events we heard about on the news or read in the newspaper. I have
a love for reading fact based stories and biographies so, I decided to share this
with the students.
We find a lesson in each story. Some lessons are important to keeping ourselves out of dangerous
situations and others teach us to not let fear keep us from doing what we love. There are stories
that show how communities pull together to help victims of hurricanes and tsunamis. We also learn
how our amazing body works to protect us when we are hurt. Many words we have discussed are
hypothermia, frostbite, shock, arteries, nerves, senses and amputation and transfusions
just to name a few.
Many parents have commented that their children are even wanting to read the local newspaper!
